There's a recently-published book that studies the effect of right-wing ideology on environmental issues: "Merchants of Doubt" by Naomi Oreskes. She's a scientist, and reviews the issues of smoking and cancer, acid rain, ozone depletion, second-hand smoke, global warming, and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring.
