Quilting a Memory: Friendship and Commemorative Quilts September 17 - November 19, 2011 Come celebrate the creative spirit of generations of area quilters with a memorable exhibition. Quilting a Memory: Friendship and Commemorative Quilts opens September 17 at the Rogers Historical Museum. Sponsorship for this special exhibition is being provided by The Rabbit’s Lair. A sneak preview of the exhibit will be available during the last Twilight Walk, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 16. Opening day will be celebrated by demonstrations of hand-quilting techniques in the exhibit gallery and a reception and display of antique quilts at The Rabbit’s Lair. The several examples of friendship quilts and five examples of commemorative quilts included in this exhibit date from the late 1800s through the 1900s. Once necessary items, quilts in more recent times became heirlooms passed down for generations. Friendship and commemorative quilts were especially prized as keepsakes. As commercially made bedcovers became more common, women made quilts less often. Then in the mid 1900s a resurgence of interest in quilting accompanied a renewed interest in all sorts of traditional crafts. Quilting bees once more became popular as Home Demonstration Clubs stressed the self-reliant practices of previous generations. This exhibit will feature several outstanding examples of friendship quilts, some made by church groups and others by local Home Demonstration Clubs. These quilts range from a simple crazy quilt made in the early 1900s as a fundraiser to an elaborate mid-1900s appliqué quilt lavishly embroidered with the names of the women of the Larue community. These friendship quilts will be joined by five commemorative quilts. One quilt commemorates our local Bicentennial celebration, while another celebrates the Rogers Historical Museum's own 25th anniversary. Accompanying the exhibit will be a hands-on activity for both children and adults. Using wallpaper scraps cut into various shapes, visitors working alone or as a group can create their own memories of this inspiring exhibit. Quilting a Memory will remain on view through November 19, 2011. The Rogers Historical Museum is located at 322 South Second Street, at the corner of Second and Cherry in the Rogers Historic District. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free.
