Marie Deacon Landon, 73, passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2022. She was born on June 9, 1948, to Dorine and Jack Deacon in Jonesboro, Ark., where she spent her early life. Marie was an accomplished swimmer, winning many competitions and setting state records that stood for many years. After her studies and cheerleading days at Jonesboro High, she continued her education at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and then the University of Arkansas, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees at the UofA and enjoying life-long friends through her membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Marie then moved to Austin, Texas, for her first job, working for the Texas Historical Commission. It was in Austin that she met a charming doctoral student and future husband, Brooks Landon. His career soon led them to Iowa City, Iowa, where she worked in preserving local historical buildings, and where they began and raised their family. An illness in early adulthood limited Marie's physical abilities but didn't dampen her loving spirit and sweet smile. Marie is preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother of Jonesboro; husband; children, Bren Landon of Washington, D.C., and Richard Landon (Paige) of Minneapolis, Minn.; brothers, Barry Deacon of San Antonio, Texas, John Deacon (Myra) of Jonesboro, and Rush Deacon (Debbie) of North Little Rock; brother-in-law, John Landon (Diane); sister-in-law, Sherry Deacon; and grandson, Sterling Landon. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240, or St. Bernard's Hospital, 225 E. Washington Ave. Jonesboro, Ark. 72401
