Martha Jeanne McCracken Agee

Martha Jeanne McCracken Agee was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend. She died peacefully on May 31, 2022. She was born on January 9, 1933, to Russell and Lottie McCracken. She is preceded in death by her parents as well as her loving husband, Dr. Jake Agee. She is survived by her children, Dr. Kim Agee (Janie), Mignonne Scarbrough (Spencer), Chandra Weeks (Don), and Dr. Eve Agee (Scott); her seven grandchildren; her sister, Ann Ashton of Virginia; and her brother-in-law, Aaron Agee of New York. Martha attended the University of Arkansas, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She earned a Bachelor of Science of Education in 1954, a Master's degree in counseling in 1965, and an Educational Specialist's Certificate in 1972. Martha worked for Fayetteville Public Schools for the majority of her career. In 1972, she and Dr. Carmen Lierly founded Uptown School, an alternative learning environment for students who were in danger of dropping out. Uptown also offered pregnant students the only opportunity to continue their education at that time. Martha served as the director of Uptown School from 1989 until her retirement in 1996. Martha was also a member of Asbury Class at Central United Methodist Church, Altrusa International, PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Winers and Diners dinner club. She was honored as an Outstanding Woman by Washington County Women in History and in the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation Hall of Honor. Her life will be celebrated at a memorial service later this summer. Donations in her memory may be made to Fayetteville Public Education Foundation and/or Fayetteville Public Library.
