Eula "Jean" Rowls Ogden Bartels, 93, passed away on January 27, 2022, in Fayetteville, Ark. She was born near Hanna in rural McIntosh County, Okla., on August 18, 1928, to James Martin Rowls and Rosalee Reeves Rowls. She was one of seven children who never felt the hunger experienced by so many during the Great Depression because they raised their own food on their family farm. Jean was our Steel Magnolia who made our world a beautiful place in her own special way. Before relocating to Fayetteville, Ark., in 2019, Jean lived most of her adult life as a resident of Lake Charles, La. where she worked in the beauty industry until her 90th birthday. She was a hair-stylist and a successful business owner who owned her own salon. After retiring, she remained in the beauty industry and worked in retail sales at Sally Beauty where at one time she was recognized for having the highest product sales company-wide. She was a lifelong Democrat who loved Bill and Hillary Clinton, telling jokes, loved music, and especially her sweets. Chocolate ice cream, Hershey Kisses, chocolate chip cookies were her favorite meals of the day, but most dear to Jean was her family. Jean was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who made "her kids" the center of her world. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Kennedy of Fayetteville, Ark., and Linda Mitchell of Lake Charles, La. She was adoringly known as "Nana" to her three grandchildren, Angela Moody of Little Rock, Ark., Adam Norwood of Austin, Texas, Cory Mitchell (Brittany) of Lake Charles, La.; three-great grandchildren, Hayden Mitchell, Jude Mitchell, and Eden Moody, all of whom she allowed to jump on the bed, and she spoiled with homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies. Jean also leaves behind two sisters, Wanda Stankowitz of South Plainfield, N.J. and Mary Crews of Blackwell, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband, O. H. "Bud" Bartels; her parents; two brothers, Justin Davis Stanford, Eli Rowls; and two sisters, Bertha Rowls Rowland Wolf, and Edna Sisco. Our gratitude to the entire medical staff of Washington Regional Medical Center, North Hills Life and Rehab, Circle of Life Hospice, Central EMS for the superior care they showed to Jean. A special heartfelt thanks to Virginia Collins a WRMC staff member whose special kindness and compassion far exceeded her job description and requirements. At Jean's request, there will be a private family memorial. In memory of Jean, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, please eat chocolate ice cream and a Hershey's Kiss. Jean had osteoporosis and her passing was caused by multiple severe injuries from a fall. Our family hopes that you make a donation to yourself and in her memory, get a bone density test. Cremation arrangements by Beard's Funeral Chapel. Condolences at www.beardsfuneralchapel.com
