Herbert Anderson Lewis, Jr.

Herbert Anderson Lewis, Jr., was born Jan. 23, 1927, and died Dec. 13, 2018, in his lifelong home of Fayetteville. He was a product of Fayetteville Public Schools and attended the University of Arkansas and the University of New Mexico. Herb also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Along with his father Buck and his brother Tom, Herb bought the local Ford dealership, which is still in the family today. He served as President of the Arkansas Automobile Dealers Association and as Merchandising Chair for Ford. After retirement, he pursued his love of cars by restoring and selling vintage Mustangs, winning many trophies all over the country. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and served on the board of directors for several local banks and civic organizations. He was a founder of the Washington-Willow Historical District. A leader of the community and of his family, Herb was preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years, Bettye; parents Gertrude Miles and Herbert A. Lewis Sr.; son Ford Martin Lewis; and brothers Tom Lewis and John Lewis. He is survived by his brother David Lewis (Beth); sisters-in-law Margaret Lewis Leonard and Helen Marie Lewis; children Karen Lewis McDonald (Warren), Andy Lewis (Cindy), and Becky Lewis Chase (Pat); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. A funeral will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and the family will be receiving visitors in the parish hall immediately after the service.
