Freda Lucille Flenniken Stohrer passed away peacefully on May 3, 2014, with both of her daughters at her side. Freda was born in Denver, Colo., to Fred and Lucille Flenniken on Dec. 10, 1931. After a traveling childhood during the Great Depression, she was raised in the Panama Canal Zone. She attended Jacksonville State University, then returned to the Zone to marry and raise her two children and two stepchildren. While in the Canal Zone, she worked as an English teacher at Cristobal High School and Canal Zone College, sang in the Sweet Adelines Crossroads chorus and was in a first-place winning quartet, the Pan Canettes. In 1969, she relocated to Chapel Hill, N.C., where she worked for and obtained her Ph.D. in English. She then embarked on a second career as a college professor and technical writing professor, retiring from the Armed Forces Institute of Technology in 1999. After retiring from AFIT and traveling to work in Oman, she relocated to Rogers, Ark., to be near her sister and family, then to Davis, Calif., to be near her daughter. She was a lifelong teacher, and continued to teach until the end at Northwest Arkansas Community College and then tutoring her caregiver, Nataly, for her college level classes. She was a very active member of her church wherever she lived, last attending the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis, Calif. Freda is survived by her daughters, Carol Grench (Paul) of Davis, Calif., Anne Stohrer (Will Ellis) of Morrisville, Vt.; stepchildren, Linda Humphrey of Franklin, Tenn., and Don Stohrer (Kathy) of Knoxville, Tenn. She is also survived by her four beautiful grandchildren.
