Helen Hoyer Turek, 80, of Manawa, Wis., died Saturday, April 12, 2014. She was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minn., to John P. Hoyer and Sylvina (Wahl) Hoyer, both deceased. After graduating from South High School, Minneapolis, Minn., in 1951, she worked as a legal secretary for two Minnesota State Supreme Court Justices. In high school, Helen and her sister, Donna, worked at Woolworth's Dime Store where Helen met Raymond Turek. They married in 1957. She lived many years in Denver, Colo., and Pea Ridge, Ark., before moving to Manawa, Wis., to live with her daughter, Susan, and son-in-law, James. She volunteered her retirement years transporting rescued dogs with Ray. She loved knitting, bowling, writing letters to friends and relatives, gardening with Susan, caring for the wild birds, baking, family history and NASCAR cheering. Helen was especially proud of her husband, daughter, son, grandson and son-in-law serving in the U.S. military. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Turek (USAF); her son, Roger Turek (USAF); and brother-in-law, Dr. Leonard Weis. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Ouellette-Schaefer (Ret. USAF), and son-in-law, James Schaefer (Ret. US Army), granddaughter, Jamie Ouellette, all of Manawa, Wis.; grandson, Bradley Ouellette (Active duty U.S. Army) and his wife, Melisa; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Kynnedi and Taelynn of Fort Campbell, Ky.; sister, Donna Weis of Appleton, Wis.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; also special lifelong friends in Minnesota and Arkansas; and Max, her rescued 40-pound white dog. It was Helen's wish to not have services. Online condolences can be sent at www.clinehansondahlkefuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the pet rescue organization of your choice. Sadly missed and forever alive in our hearts.
