Emmett (Jerry) G. Potts, 87, of Bentonville, Ark., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. Jerry was born in Picher, Okla., on Dec. 16, 1925, the son of Paul and Belle Potts. Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He retired after 20 years of service with the rank of chief petty officer. During his naval career, he served aboard the USS Twining DD540, USS Manatee A058 and the USS Quincy CA71 with the 1st and 3rd Marine divisions. He received numerous citations and awards during his Naval career. Jerry married Sally I. Maxwell on June 3, 1949, at the Ranch House Chapel in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif. After retiring from the Navy, Jerry returned to his hometown of Bentonville, Ark. He then worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. During retirement, Jerry became a published author of the novel "Listen to the Mockingbird" and other short stories and poems. He and Sally were members of Oakley Chapel Methodist Church in Rogers, Ark. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally of over 60 years. Jerry is survived by his two daughters, Judy Harvey of Tucson, Ariz., and Susan Allen and her husband, Jim, of Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren, Laura Stewart and husband, Jason, and their daughter, Samantha, of Tucson, Ariz., Michael Harvey of Bentonville, Ark., granddaughter, Dana Arrieta and husband, Zachary, and great-great-granddaughter, Janae of Las Cruces, N.M. Jerry is also survived by his brothers and sisters, William B. Potts and wife, Berniece, Joyce Turner and husband, Gene, David Potts and wife, Norma, Gary Potts and wife, Carolyn, Glenda Isles, John Potts and wife, Carol. Of his brothers and sisters, he was preceded in death by Dolores Rose, Charles (Chuck) Potts and Charles Dixon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oakley Chapel Building Fund. A funeral service will be officiated by Shane Pair at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Oakley Chapel in Rogers. Burial will follow at Bentonville Cemetery in Bentonville, Ark.
