Athadean Self Weir

Athadean Self Weir, 85, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Earlene Howard Hospice House in Springdale. She was born Nov. 20, 1926, in Waldron, Ark. She was the daughter of Roy Dennis Self Sr. and Sadie Marie Kopf Self. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Robbie Marie Self, Eva Leta Self Thomas; one brother, R.D. Self Jr. Growing up during the Great Depression left a mark on her character that lasted her entire life. She could never bring herself to waste anything and could find a use for most everything, including bread bags. During the World War II years, she served as a teacher in the rural schools of the Waldron School System. She later worked as a pharmacy assistant at the Waldron Drug Store, where she met and began a courtship with her future husband, Leslie Byrum Weir. They were married Oct. 12, 1949, at the First Baptist Church in Waldron. Athadean is survived by her husband of the home; one daughter, Brenda Weir Cox of Siloam Springs; and one son, Dr. James Roy Weir and wife, Cindy, of Cave Springs. Athadean leaves a legacy of 10 grandchildren, Michael Alan Cox, Paige Lesley Cox, Mark Franklin Cox, Erin Elisabeth Cox, Bailey Ann Cox, Andrew Collins Weir, Lindsey Weir Gibson, Tyler James Weir, Jennifer Watson Sizemore and Michael Elias Hathorn. She was also richly blessed with 10 great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Pauline Self Mitchell of Mountain Pine, Ark.; one brother, Raymond L. Self of Waldron; her caregivers, Brenda Dowell and Sue Wallis. Athadean is also survived by the members of Faith Sunday School Class of Cross Church Springdale where she worshipped for 58 years. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 3, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale, with the Rev. Cliff Palmer and the Rev. Charlie Foster officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time on Thursday. Memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Road, Springdale, AR 72762.
