Gilbert Aaron Smith Jr.

Gilbert Aaron Smith Jr., 91, of Springdale died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at his home. He was born May 24, 1920, in Little Rock to Gilbert Aaron and Jayme Mamees Smith Sr. Gilbert served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He served in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Goshen Baptist Church and he and his wife served in missions in the Philippines, India, France and Germany with the Southern Baptist Convention. He was a longtime member of the Heber Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Smith and B. Roy Smith. Survivors include his wife, Gearldean (Jerry) Smith of the home; one son, Randy Carr and wife, Clarinda, of Fayetteville; two daughters, Dixie Rynone and husband, Stewart, of Goshen, and Gale Love and husband, Bob, of Springdale; one niece, Jayme Dizzley of Little Rock, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be Monday, March 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. at The Memorial Gardens in Heber Springs, Ark. No visitation is planned. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 92 W. Sunbridge Drive, Fayetteville, AR 72703; or a charity of your choice. Arrangements in Northwest Arkansas are under the direction of Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale, www.siscofuneral.com, and in Heber Springs arrangements are under the direction of Olmstead Funeral Home, www.olmstead.cc.
