Greenwood baseball splits in Little Rock; Van Buren, Fort Smith teams have busy week

The Greenwood Bulldogs swept a doubleheader in the opening day of the Robinson Invitational in Little Rock.

Greenwood downed Brookland, 7-0, in the first game and beat Maumelle, 2-0, in the second game in eight innings.

Grant Karnes threw six hitless innings against Maumelle, walking one and striking out six.

Austin Mitchell earned the win with two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.

Zach Zitzmann and Austin Bercher scored Greenwood's runs, and Zitzman had two hits.

In the 7-0 win over Brookland, Mason Moore threw 6-2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to earn the win.

Friday, Greenwood dropped a 4-3 decision in eight innings to Hot Springs Lakeside and a 9-2 decision to Little Rock Christian. Karnes had two hits for the Bulldogs in the final game.

Greenwood hosts Van Buren on Tuesday in a 5A-West doubleheader.

VAN BUREN

The Pointers opened the Perfect Game Showcase in Memphis with a 6-0 loss to Collinsworth, Tenn., against Missouri signee Ethan Bagwell.

Van Buren managed just one hit, by Peyton Pschier, off Bagwell, who signed in November.

The Pointers had opportunities, with a runner at third with no outs, runners at second and third with one out, and runner at third with one out during a three-inning span.

Weston Wilcox absorbed the loss for Van Buren but struck out 10 and gave up no earned runs over five innings. He walked two and allowed three hits.

Van Buren defeated Illinois Crossroads, 21-0, in four innings.

Ian Rowe rapped out three hits with a single, double and a triple, and Matthew Nichols and Owen Weeden had two hits, including a double each. Nichols drove in three runs and Weeded each drove in three runs. Mason Dalmut drove home two runs with a double.

Hudson Stewart and Gabe Hines combined on a one-hitter, throwing two innings each.

Van Buren travels to Greenwood on Tuesday for a 5A-West doubleheader.

FORT SMITH SOUTHSIDE

Southside went 2-2 in the Gulf Coast Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., over spring break.

The Mavericks opened with an extra-inning 6-5 win.

Tied at 5-5, pinch-hitting Cash Castaneda opened the eighth inning with a walk before Peyton Zimmerman was plunked by a pitch, moving pinch runner Parker Ellis to second. Will Hanesworth followed with a base hit, scoring Ellis for the lead.

Kade Wehunt had two singles for Southside.

Mason Howe earned the win in relief.

The Mavericks followed with a 6-4 loss to East Robertson.

Senior shortstop Jackson Pruitt had three hits in four trips to the plate with a pair of doubles for the Mavericks and scored twice.

Zimmerman and Wehunt each had two hits, and Hanesworth drove in two runs. Zimmerman stole three bases.

Southside defeated Sallisaw, Okla., in the third game, 8-3.

Southside scored twice in the opening inning and added four runs in the second inning to take control early.

Howe, Zimmerman, Hanesworth, Wehunt and Blake Forsgren all drove in a run. Forsgren had a single and a double.

Howe earned the win with no earned runs in 5-2/3 innings with Castaneda and Wilson key closing out the win.

Southside dropped its final game of the tournament, losing 5-4 setback to Muskogee, Okla., in another extra-inning game.

Cayden Maness singled home Pruitt with the first of two runs in the first inning for the Mavericks with Maness scoring on a ground out by Hanesworth.

Hanesworth singled home Zimmerman in the fifth inning, and Pruitt scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 4-4 before Muskogee scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

Southside travels to Rogers Heritage on Monday and is back at home on Tuesday in 6A-West play.

FORT SMITH NORTHSIDE

The Grizzlies went 1-3 in Millington, Tenn., this past week.

Northside opened the tournament with 1-0 win over Millington, Tenn., Central on Monday.

Andrew Taylor threw six innings of shutout ball for the Grizzlies, needing just 87 pitches.

Taylor scattered three singles, walked none and struck out 10.

Lucas Caldarera earned the save with three strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Logan Matlock reached on an error with two outs in the top of the third and stole second. Jaxson Stephens singled, and Matlock scored on an error on the play for the game's only run.

Catcher Alex Martinez also had a hit for Northside.

Northside lost to Christian Brothers, 12-2, and to Tipton-Rosmarck Academy, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Taylor had two hits, and Mason Kincannon had a hit and drove in run in the 2-1 loss.

On Wednesday, Northside dropped a 5-4 decision to Covington, Tenn.

Northside rapped out nine hits in the loss.

Evan Ross, Kincannan and Cash Standridge each had two hits with Ross driving in two runs. Taylor scored twice with a single and a walk, and stole two bases.

Northside welcomes Fayetteville to Hunts Park on Monday and travels to Fayetteville on Tuesday for 6A-West games.

HACKETT SOFTBALL

The Lady Hornets went 2-1 in the Farmington Invitational to begin spring break last weekend.

Hackett lost the opener to Bentonville West, 5-3, before shutting out both Lincoln, 5-0, and Farmington, 11-0.

In 19 innings pitched over the three games, Makenzie Freeman allowed 11 hits and just one earned run with 23 strikeouts.

In the 5-0 win against Lincoln, Freeman pitched a no-hitter and also walked none with only an error preventing a perfect game. She struck out eight in seven innings.

Lilly Oxford had five hits in the three games, drove in three runs with a double against Lincoln as part of a four-run second inning, and had three hits with two runs scored against Farmington.

Hackett travels to Hot Springs Lakeside on Monday and hosts Booneville in a key conference game on Tuesday.
