\r\nThe city will pay up to $725,000 for 2 acres at 3058 S. 48th St., contingent on an appraisal. The money will come from the unrestricted funds in the city\'s budget.
\r\nThe Cherilee Joy Bryan Revocable Trust currently owns the property.
\r\nThe land sits to the west, across 48th from the park, between St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Phillips Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. The property is bordered on the west by Interstate 49.
\r\nMayor Doug Sprouse said the city has considered buying the property for several years. The asking price was $1.2 million in 2018, so the city did not pursue the property, he said.
\r\nThe city currently has no development plan for the property, but owning it will protect it from unwanted or inappropriate development, Sprouse said.
\r\n"It\'s a strategic piece of property to go along with our park," he said.
\r\nCouncil member Jeff Watson asked for an update on the property during the council\'s committee meetings Oct. 2.
\r\n"It\'s such a beautiful little piece of land, a flat 2 acres that would fit in easily into our park system," he said. "And this way we can control what goes on it."
\r\nNeither the council members nor city staff offered any plans for the property.
\r\nThe council also approved $15,824 for purchase of ornaments and other decorations for the lobby of the city\'s new administration building. They were presented with three possible decorating themes.
\r\nThe council during its Sept. 26 meeting agreed to spend up to $50,000 for decorations for the outside of the center. The purchase of a 22-foot lighted tree for the lobby of the building was included in the purchase.
\r\nTreeations, a Springdale company, will provide the decorations, put them up and take them down, Sprouse said.
\r\n"I told the mayor early on that there were so many positive things going on downtown we needed to showcase our new building," said Council Member Mike Lawson.
\r\nSprouse during Tuesday\'s meeting said the city might host an open house of the building.
\r\nTuesday\'s approval of $15,824 will buy ornaments for the tree, $5,326; sprays, picks and ribbons, $8,197; design and decorating, $1,600; someone to help the designer, $180; and removing and storing the decorations, $520.
\r\n"It\'s a lot of money, but it\'s a lot of stuff," Lawson said. "That lobby is a big area to decorate."
\r\nLawson pointed out the tree, the ornaments and other decorations are a one-time purchase. The city will own them and reuse them in coming years.
\r\nThe city will pay a yearly fee for decoration and removal after the Christmas season, Sprouse said.
