An airplane crashed Saturday while on approach to Baxter County Airport, causing serious injuries to the pilot, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane, a single-engine Bellanca 17-30A Super Viking, crashed at about 4:15 p.m., the agency said in an email.

A preliminary report from the FAA said the plane crashed off the departure end of a runway while it circled for approach in gusty wind conditions.

The wreck resulted in serious injuries for the pilot and substantial damage to the plane, the email states. Officials said that only the pilot was onboard at the time of the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the wreck.
