Orchids

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. today, Aug. 21, at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale.

Alan Koch will speak on orchid nutrition. Koch owns Gold Country Orchids in Lincoln, Calif., specializing in miniature and compact Cattleyas. He is recognized as an expert in the Brazilian Cattleya alliance and a trend setter in miniature Cattleya breeding. He has been published in the Orchid Digest, the American Orchid Society magazine, as well as many International Publications. He has also been published in several proceedings of the World Orchid Conference.

Dems

The Benton County Dems will meet at noon Aug. 22 at Golden Corral, 2605 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. Social time and lunch begin at 11 a.m., followed by the meeting. The featured speaker will be Christian May, democratic candidate for Justice of the Peace, District 5. The meeting is also available via Zoom.

SUV

The McPherson Camp of the Sons Of Union Veterans of the Civil War will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 at Whole Hog Cafe, 1400 S.E. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville. Members gather for dinner and visitation at 6 p.m. with a business meeting held at 7 p.m. The group is a patriotic, fraternal organization of male descendants of members of the United States Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard or who served as government officials 1861-65.

Rotary

The Rotary Club of Fayetteville will meet in person at Mermaids Restaurant at 11:45 a.m. Aug. 25. The program will be by Colbie Jones of Keeping Arkansas Beautiful. There is still a live Zoom option for those who do not feel comfortable attending in person. Email the club for a link if interested.

Nebraskans

The Nebraska Club of Northwest Arkansas will gather at 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Tanyard Creek Pavilion in Bella Vista to kick off the 2022 fall sports season. A pulled pork, beans and coleslaw meal and beverages will be served. Cost is $15 per person, and reservations are necessary.

Retired Nurses

The Retired Nurses of Northwest Arkansas will meet at noon Aug. 30 at Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville in Classroom A. An optional lunch can be purchased at the Allspice Cafe prior to the meeting. The topic, Macular Degeneration, will be presented by Tommye Jones, PA, who is associated with the office of Dr. Della Croce at the Retina Center of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Civil War

The Bella Vista Civil War Round Table will meet at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Bella Vista Historical Museum. Jim Erwin will make his second visit to the group to present his program on "Jesse James: the Man, the Myth and the Movie." The program will look at the historic story of the infamous Jesse James, his role as a Civil War guerrilla fighter, post-war criminal and the legend that he would become both in his lifetime and to this day.

For those who may not be familiar with the movie, "Jesse James" was filmed n Pineville and southwest Missouri in 1938. Erwin will make his presentation at the conclusion of the movie at 7 p.m.

Due to the short time between the movie and the talk, guests are invited to bring snacks or a carry-in dinner to eat during the movie. The meeting is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted to help with the speaker expenses.

Andante

Andante Music Club of Bella Vista will hold a "New Beginnings" luncheon at noon Sept. 6 at Highland Christian Church, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista. Jane Powell, harpist, will present a program at 1 p.m.

Gardeners

The next meeting of the Benton County Master Gardeners will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 with a social hour at 5:30. The topic is the migration of Monarch butterflies. Meetings are open to the public and take place at the Bentonville Church of Christ located at 816 N.W. Eighth St. in Bentonville.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who are trained in horticulture and share their training by participating in community projects.
