Park plans prescribed burns

Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct prescribed burns at times during the next several weeks. Burns will take place as weather conditions permit.

Parts of the park and trails may be closed during these burns to ensure public safety. Some fields and woodlands will be burned, said Kevin Eads, park superintendent.

To find out if burns will be conducted on any given day, call the visitor center, 479-451-8122.

Series highlights wild food

Wild Table, a workshop and dinner series hosted by Apple Seeds Teaching Farm in Fayetteville, approaches food ethics, responsibility and the process of harvesting and curating food from the wild.

The series will merge the talents and expertise of the hunter, angler, butcher, forager, nutritionist and culinary artist as food is taken from its point of origin to the table. This series explores wild food as part of a healthy diet and as part of a sustainable food system.

The series starts on April 11 and ends July 7. Cost is $135 per person and is limited to 30 people.

Team tops Castmasters field

Johnny Brewer and Willie Villines won the NWA Castmasters bass tournament held March 14 at Beaver Lake. Their tournament limit of five bass weighed 19 pounds. They had the tournament's big bass, which weighed 6.73 pounds.

Les McClean fished solo to take second with five bass at 17.97 pounds. David Louks and Collin Cheatham were third with five bass at 17.47 pounds.

Fourth through 10th, all with five bass, were: fourth, Dale Marsh, Jeff Cook, 17.42; fifth, Richard Rollins, Brian Burkes, 15.65; sixth, Monte Wheeler, Scott Bowen, 14.23; seventh, Brad Gabbard, Richard Curren, 13.74; eighth, Steve Bailey, Rob Bailey, 13.62; ninth, Wes Paulin, Nate Paulin, 13.55; 10th, Titus Artt, Colby Foster, 12.38.

Racers grind on gravel

Registration for the Big Sugar NWA gravel bike race will be April 1-10 for the event set for Oct. 23.

Cyclists can choose the 100-mile or 50-mile race over gravel roads in the region. Entry fee is $140 for the 100 mile and $80 for the 50 mile. Register at bigsugargravel.com.

Speakers talk outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, kayaking and similar activities are invited to free outdoor related programs at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month at Cross Church, 1709 Johnson Road, in Springdale.

Get bikepacking sites online

Reservations for bikepacking and backpacking campsites at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area are now available online. Visit www.arkansasstateparks.com and go to the Hobbs State Park page to make a reservation.

Sites are $14 per night plus tax. For more information call the visitor center, 479-789-5000.

Centers open full time

Visitor centers at Arkansas state parks in Northwest Arkansas are now open seven days each week. They are no longer closed Monday and Tuesday. These include visitor centers at Prairie Grove Battlefield, Devil's Den, Withrow Springs and Hobbs state parks.

High Country Race returns

The annual Arkansaw High Country Race will be held Oct. 9 with registration opening June 1. The event features a 1,000 mile cycling race or a 240 mile route. Each is limited to 50 contestants.

The 1,000 mile race is a bikepacking event that follows the Arkansas High Country Route on gravel and pavement through the Ozarks, Arkansas River Valley and Ouachitas.

Contest tests outdoor skills

Registration is open for the Brewha Bushwhack outdoor skills team event to be hosted by Pack Rat Outdoor Center on April 10.

Teams of three or four people visit check points around the Mulberry River and earn points by building a fire, paddling a canoe, tying knots, rappelling, identifying plants and animal tracks and more.
