Walmart Inc. has joined other top companies that will make customers’ vaccination status available on vaccination “passport” apps being developed through an international initiative, the retailer said Thursday.

As a provider of covid-19 inoculations through more than 5,400 U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies, the apps will give Walmart customers access to their health data, starting with their vaccination records.

App users can quickly show verification of their vaccination status as they return to travel, work, school, sporting events and other venues, Walmart said.

One app is being developed by the Commons Project Foundation in Geneva and the other is by U.S.-based CLEAR.

“Our goal is to give customers … free and secure digital access to their vaccine record to enable them to share that information with third parties seeking to confirm their vaccination status,” said John Furner, president and chief executive officer of Walmart U.S.
