Forecasters warn of afternoon heat in River Valley

Forecasters are alerting Arkansans in the River Valley to take precautions against excessive heat Tuesday afternoon.

A heat warning has been issued for noon t0 8 p.m. in Crawford, Sebastian and Franklin counties, where heat index values up to 113 are possible, according to the National Weather Service.

A high temperature of 96 degrees is forecast for Tuesday in Fort Smith. A high of 98 is predicted for Wednesday.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible," the service says on its website.

Temperatures are expected to drop below 80 overnight.

In Fayetteville, temperatures are expected to be lower, but still hot.

A high of 93 degrees and a maximum heat index value up to 105 is forecast for the area.
