Road rage alleged in assault charge

HOT SPRINGS -- A Hot Springs man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a felony assault charge after other motorists said a gun was pointed at them during a road rage incident.

Kenneth Ray Kelley, 69, who lists a Fitzhugh Drive address, was taken into custody shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Central Avenue and charged with aggravated assault, punishable by up to six years in prison.

Kelley, who lists no prior criminal history, was later released on $2,500 bond and is set to appear Dec. 1 in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hot Springs police Officer 1st Class Brandon McAdoo responded to the 3800 block of Central to assist Officer 1st Class Shawn Lowrey with a traffic stop on a man reported to have been involved in an earlier assault with a firearm.

McAdoo spoke to the two alleged male victims who stated they were driving south in the 3500 block of Central when a vehicle pulled out in front of them, prompting the one man to "honk his horn in frustration."

After he honked, the driver of the other car, later identified as Kelley, slowed down and got beside them in traffic, he said, and then pulled out a silver handgun, loaded it and pointed it at both of them. He said once he saw the gun pointed at them he immediately called police and followed Kelley until Lowrey pulled him over.

When questioned, Kelley reportedly admitted he had a handgun in his front seat. The affidavit notes the gun, a loaded .380-caliber, matched the description of the gun given by the victims.
