School news: Scholars honored as year ends

Georgia Tech

The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta awarded degrees to approximately 4,050 undergraduate and graduate students at the conclusion of the spring semester. Students were recognized during a virtual celebration held on May 1. They will also be honored during in-person commencement ceremonies to be held on campus later this year.

Among the graduates were:

Joshua Cannell of Bentonville, Master of Science in Computer Science.

Seth Cooper Baer of Paris, Master of Science in Computer Science.

Grant Larkin of Rogers, Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

One of the nation's leading research universities, Georgia Tech is ranked in the nation's top five public universities by U.S. News & World Report.

University of Utah

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City congratulates more than 7,500 students who were named to the spring 2020 Dean's List. The following local students made the list:

Stefan Mcgee of Bentonville, whose major is listed as Games BS.

Acadia Pinault of Bella Vista, whose major is listed as Games BS.

The B.S. in Games (BSG) degree is intended specifically for students who aspire to hold careers within the professional games industry or a related field, such as simulation, edutainment or visualization and is designed to prepare students to compete in an increasingly complex industry.

To qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher in at least 12 graded credit hours during any one term.

Harding University

Harding University in Searcy cited 64 students who were named to the College of Pharmacy Dean's List for spring 2020. The Dean's List standing is reserved for full-time students with a 3.80 or higher grade point average.

Among those honored were Taylor Oates of Paris; Emily Richardson of Ozark; and Amelia Whitkanack of Clarksville.

Harding University is a private Christian university and the largest private university in the state.

Berea College

More than 730 students at Berea College in Berea, Ky., were named to the spring 2020 Dean's List. A student is named to the Dean's List who achieves a GPA of 3.4 or higher while passing at least four total credits, a course load equivalent to 16 semester hours.

Among those honored were Dongsoo Lee of Rogers and Ian Paine of Gentry.

Berea, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor, and service.

Mississippi College

Alexis Richards of Bentonville was named to the fall 2019 President's List at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.

To be eligible for the President's List, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average, based on a 4.0 system. The student must take a full course load of at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit with all academic courses impacting their grade point average.

Mississippi College, affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention, is a private, co-educational, Christian university of liberal arts and sciences.

DePauw University

Anna Horak from Springdale has been named to DePauw University's spring 2020 Dean's List.

The Dean's List recognizes students who achieve a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Founded in 1837, DePauw University is a top-ranked private liberal arts university in Greencastle, Ind.

University of Iowa

Jacob Thompson of Fayetteville is one of two current graduate students, two incoming graduate students and three undergraduates who have been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship to support their graduate studies.at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

The award provides the students with three years of financial support -- a $34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to the graduate institution -- for graduate study that leads to a research-based master's or doctoral degree in chemistry, computer and information sciences, engineering, geosciences, life sciences, materials research, mathematical sciences, physics and astronomy, psychology, social sciences and STEM education in learning research.

NPR Challenge

Two Bentonville students have been named finalists in National Public Radio's Student Podcast Challenge, a nationwide competition that asks students and teachers to take a topic, a lesson or a unit they're learning about and turn it into a podcast.

Winning podcasts, one from grades five through eight and another from grades nine through 12, will be featured in segments on NPR's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered."

Thaden School student Sam Meneses interviewed his brother about a kayaking journey through the Amazon, while Thaden student Elise McClay, who moved to the United States recently from Australia, explored in her podcast her expectations of life in the U.S. vs. the realities of her new home in Bentonville.

University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi recently announced students named to the spring 2020 Honor Roll lists, including Chancellor's Honor Roll. The list included Gwendelyn Mae Gardner of Bella Vista; Amanda Arnold of Bentonville; Alexander James Sembrot of Centerton; Lilianne Belle McKissack of Clarksville; Kathryn Grace Kelly of Fayetteville; Kiley Marie Robison of Fort Smith; Destiny Rachelle Wilson of Harrison; Peyton Leigh Emerson of Rogers; Nicholas Scott Chamberlain of Rogers; Kaylan Melvin of Rogers; and Lauren Diane Thompson of Springdale.

In order to be eligible for Ole Miss honor roll designation, a student must have completed at least 12 graded hours for the semester and may not be on academic probation during the semester.
