Pet of the Week

Eleanor is our pet of the week.
Eleanor is our pet of the week.

Eleanor, a 7-year-old, 80-pound shepherd mix, had lived her entire life in the backyard of a woman who also had a smaller dog and a cat. The woman and the other pets died in a house fire in early October. Ellie was found the next day hiding in the yard. She was terrified when she entered an animal control facility and got worse every day she was there. A behaviorist suggested that Ellie get more alone time outside. She is now doing phenomenally well. She can be left alone, either outside or inside, with no problem. She is housebroken and doesn't care much about getting up on furniture. Ellie will likely never be able to be trusted alone with other animals. She does great on walks, but not with close dog/dog interaction. However, she is a sweet, loving and playful dog. She requires a fenced backyard, and a home with no other pets. She is one of those "once in a lifetime" dogs who will steal someone's heart. Eleanor is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. She is also heartworm positive and is awaiting a follow-up veterinary visit to determine her course of treatment. CARE will be responsible for all related expenses. Her adoption fee is $200.

Canine Close-Up

Lefty is a playful, young Labrador mix. He's friendly, smart and gets along great with other dogs. He loves toys and will entertain himself with them if he has no playmate. He will be a perfect companion for an active individual or family needing a buddy for life's adventures. Lefty is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. He has tested positive for heartworm disease. He will be treated for this condition by Little Rock Animal Services at no cost to his adopter. His adoption fee is $250. Lefty received obedience training through the Paws in Prison program and graduated from the program on Dec. 12. The dogs in this program are trained under the AKC Canine Good Citizen standards and are specifically selected to be family and companion dogs. They spend 24 hours a day with their trainers. They do best in homes where they are primarily inside dogs and spend lots of time with their families. The adoptive family will receive his training journal, documenting his daily progress and interactions with his trainers.

Eleanor and friends can be adopted through Central Arkansas Rescue Effort for Animals (CARE). More information is available at (501) 603-9895 and careforanimals.org.
