UALR men's coach lined up to speak

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Trojans men's basketball coach is to speak Tuesday at the Downtown Tip-Off Club, at 100 Main St., in North Little Rock, according to a news release.

Darrell Walker's speech from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. is part of the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce luncheon speaker series. That series begins in December and ends in February. High school "Players of the Week" will also be honored at the event.

More information about tickets and reservations can be obtained by calling (501) 906-6300.

Walk-ins are also welcome to attend.

All money raised from the luncheon will go toward expanding the One Heart Playground, an all-accessible playground in Burns Park.

14th Street bridge project advances

North Little Rock entered into an agreement Monday with the Arkansas Department of Transportation in regard to funding for the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge Crossing Project.

The City Council unanimously approved a resolution to enter in the agreement and to accept $470,000 for the project.

The resolution also appropriated $209,500 from the city's Sales Tax Capital Improvement Fund for the project.

The bridge, planned to be 10 feet wide and 140 feet long, will replace a 72-year-old wooden structure that was built for vehicles but has been deemed too dangerous for the past two years for even pedestrians to use. The route, though, is a vital and safe crossing in a residential area, especially for children, given it is a short distance from a local Boys and Girls Club.

In the application for the grant, city officials say pedestrians are crawling between cars of stopped trains, creating "an unsafe condition."
