Blood center

seeks donors

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the area's exclusive provider of blood and plasma products to patients at more than 40 area hospitals, is experiencing a critical need for most blood types. Donations are needed immediately to ensure that adequate reserve levels are maintained.

During the month of February, donors will receive a blue "Rewind" T-shirt, a retro look back on your favorite cassette mix tapes of the past.

On average, a transfusion takes place every seven minutes, and around 200 donations are needed each day to meet the area's blood needs. You can help by giving blood at the following drives:

Red Cross

fights cancer

Patients fighting cancer need more blood than patients fighting any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation's blood supply. That's why this February, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time, ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer.

Bell to

lecture

Bryan Bell will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Bell is an associate professor in the School of Architecture in North Carolina State University. He is also the founder and executive director of Design Corps, a nonprofit design service and advocacy organization in Raleigh, N.C.

In his lecture, Bell will discuss public interest design, including the unrealized potential of design and the many benefits of design.

This is the Fay Jones School Honors Program Lecture.

Black women

to lead panel

The Washington County Historical Society's Diverse Settlers Committee will present two panel discussions on local black women leaders and professionals during a forum at 2 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale. The event is being held in recognition of this year's 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The afternoon's program will begin with a reception from 2 to 2:20 p.m. followed by the first panel. A musical interlude will feature black female vocalist Ocie Fisher followed by the second panel.

The first panel will focus on "Black Women Leaders in Education, Government and Community Service." Panelists will be Cynthia Nance, dean emerita of the University of Arkansas School of Law; Carolyn Allen, dean emerita of University of Arkansas Libraries; Dr. Denise Hoy, principal of Agee Lierly Life Preparation Services in Fayetteville; Jessie B. Bryant of Fayetteville, former Washington County justice of the peace; and Angela Mosley Monts, president of the Phi Alpha Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

The second panel will center on "Northwest Arkansas Black Women Professionals." Panelists will be Edith Hawkins, retired head of nurses at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville; Dr. Glenda Patterson, pulmonologist at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville; Elizabeth Avery, director of finance at Mercy Health Care in Rogers; Edwina Hancock, the first African-American in the Walmart information systems department and a former supervisor; and Cora Davis, retired vice president for apparel at Walmart Stores.

Writers Colony

hosts workshop

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow will host "Page to Stage," a workshop led by Five & Dime Drama Collective. This comprehensive five-day workshop is designed for writers of poetry, prose, flash fiction and short stories. Learn everything you need to know to adapt your work for the stage and create a micro-play of 5 to 10 minutes. Every year Five & Dime produces a full stage production of a selection of first-run micro-plays. This workshop will enable you to create a play that will be eligible for submission.

The workshop will start be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 24 and from 1 to 3 p.m. through Feb. 28. The workshop will culminate on Friday with the opportunity to see Five & Dime actors read from your script. The standard workshop fee for the class is $150. The deluxe workshop fee of $430 includes the workshop, meals and lodging on Monday through Thursday nights at the Writers' Colony. Participants may reserve additional consecutive nights at the reduced rate of $75 per night based on availability and single occupancy. The workshop is strictly limited to eight participants.

Grove hosts

car show

The second annual Grove Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 at the Grove Civic Center, 18th and South Main streets in Grove, Okla. Registration will be from 4 to 7 p.m. March 13 and 7 a.m. to noon March 14. Early registration is $15 by March 2 and $20 at the door. To receive a registration form, email [email protected].

The first 50 registered will receive goodie bags and dash plaques. Trophies will be awarded for best in show, people's choice and sponsor's choice. First and second place awards for cars and trucks in the following categories: Pre-WWII, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's 1970's, 1990's, 2000's, rat rod, orphan and foreign and first and second motorcycles. There will be a cash award for the club with the most participants.

The show will also include door prizes, 50-50 pot, music and a concession stand. Admission is free to the public.

All fundraising efforts by Grove Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association go for projects benefiting the Grove Police Department.
