Ammonia leak quelled at poultry plant

A Springdale turkey processing plant reported an ammonia leak Thursday. No one was injured, officials said.

At 10:20 a.m., firefighters responded to a hazardous materials alert at a Cargill Inc. poultry plant at 730 E. Randall Wobbe Lane. A liquid ammonia leak was found at the north side of the building. Workers were evacuated.

Large refrigeration systems require tons of ammonia.

Springdale Fire Department Capt. Matt Bagley said the ammonia didn't escape the plant or contaminate nearby property. The department's hazardous materials team and Cargill personnel contained the leak at 12:15 p.m. The plant resumed operations shortly after.

Ammonia can lead to death in some cases.

Cargill is investigating the cause of the leak, spokesman April Nelson said in an email Friday.

"Our employees are safe and we are confident we will deliver for our customers," she said. "We are grateful for the Springdale Fire Department's quick response and assistance."
