HIGHFILL -- Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport was recently honored as one of the best in the state.

The Arkansas Department of Aeronautics awarded XNA "Arkansas Airport of the Year" during the state Airport Operators Association Conference in Hot Springs on Sept. 17.

"Selecting the Arkansas Airport of the Year is never an easy task. We have many very good airports in this state," said Jerry Chism, Arkansas Department of Aeronautics director. "Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport certainly meets -- and in fact, exceeds -- all of these requirements."

Aaron Burkes, CEO of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, said it's a team effort.

He called the award "a testament to the hundreds of individuals who show up to work each day to offer our customers the best experience possible while flying."

Safety is a primary criteria for the award, according to officials. That includes everyone from the passengers who may be arriving or departing on a scheduled airline service, business jet, or small private aircraft to airport employees and airline staff.

The selected airport must also provide exemplary service to the community or region it serves. That includes contributing to the growth of the community, enhancing the quality of life for both the flying and nonflying public.
