Major flooding, historic flows expected at Arkansas River

Major flooding and historic flows are expected this weekend due to steady rainfall in Oklahoma.

The flow of the river should surpass that of a May 1990 flood, according to a news release from the Army Corps of Engineers.

The river is also projected to rise from moderate to major flooding levels by Saturday, according to the National Weather Service website.

The Army Corps of Engineers issued a small craft advisory April 14.

Small craft advisories are issued when the river flow exceeds 70,000 cubic feet per second.

The river should peak Saturday, May 25, near Trimble Dam in Fort Smith at 530,000 cubic feet per second.
