The Walmart On Campus store at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville reopened Monday, after closing for an extensive remodeling. The opening coincided with students' first day of classes after the winter break.

Along with a new look, the store has a broader assortment of merchandise -- mainly prepared, grab-and-go food items like sandwiches, salads and yogurt parfaits -- as well as conveniences like pickup lockers for online orders, self-checkout options, and grocery delivery to dorms and campus housing.

Manager Randy Sterling said the store will continue to provide full pharmacy services with free on-campus prescription delivery. The pharmacy remained open throughout the remodeling process.

The campus store will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 10 p.m. Sundays. It mainly serves students, faculty and staff members, as well as nearby residents.

The 3,371-square-foot store is in the Garland Center at 616 N. Garland Ave. Joe R. Jones Construction Inc. of Weatherford, Texas, was the general contractor for the project.

The Fayetteville campus is one of three nationwide that has its own Walmart store. Arizona State University in Tempe and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond are the other two.

Walmart On Campus in Fayetteville was a prototype for smaller stores, such as Walmart Express, that the Bentonville retailer was studying when the campus location opened in January 2011. The typical Walmart Supercenter covers about 200,000 square feet.

The Garland Center, which opened in 2010, is a retail hub on the north end of campuswith storefronts forming a facade that conceals a six-level parking garage. The retail center is anchored by the University Bookstore. The entire project cost nearly $40 million.
