MOUNTAIN HOME -- Authorities say an inmate was pronounced dead early Wednesday at the Baxter County jail.

Sheriff John Montgomery says jailers found 53-year-old Frank Compton of Harrison unresponsive in his cell shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday. The sheriff says responders were unable to revive Compton and he was pronounced dead at the jail.

According to the sheriff, Compton was taken by ambulance Tuesday afternoon to the Baxter Regional Medical Center for an undisclosed medical issue. Montgomery says Compton was discharged from the emergency room early Tuesday evening but was arrested after witnesses said he tried to break into vehicles at the hospital.

The sheriff says Compton was then booked in the Baxter County jail Tuesday night on suspicion of public intoxication and criminal trespass.

An autopsy will determine Compton's cause of death.
