Bard Ball begins with VIP reception for theater alumnus

Patrons of Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre (AST) took to the stage Feb. 9 at the annual Bard Ball. The fundraiser was held at the University of Central Arkansas Reynolds Performance Hall in Conway.

Guests dined onstage where lighting and suspended chandeliers, centerpieces of candles in black candelabra and plumes of black ostrich feathers in vases provided a dramatic background for the gala.

The evening began with a VIP reception where partygoers could meet special guest and master of ceremonies Fergie L. Philippe, an AST alumni who is currently playing two characters in the national touring production of Hamilton.

Guests were greeted by Executive Director Mary Ruth Marotte. Artistic Director Rebekah Scallet provided a preview of the forthcoming season. She noted that since this is the 13th season the theme would be luck, fate and chance, where characters in each of the productions "seem to struggle with what fate has in store." On the bill this year are Comedy of Errors, Guys and Dolls, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet.

Money raised during the event, which included live and silent auctions, benefits the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre.
