PINE BLUFF -- The Welsh Motor Company's building here was destroyed Friday in a fire and two explosions that rocked downtown Pine Bluff. Firemen estimated the damage at between $50,00 and $75,000. Four employees of the motor company were in the building at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries, firemen said. The two-story building, owned by the Hood Company here, housed the Cadillac-Oldsmobile dealership and a paint and repair shop. Firemen said the explosions were caused by large paint containers. The fire started about 5 p.m. and was under control by about 7:30 p.m., although it was still burning at 8 p.m. No other buildings in the vicinity were damaged. Joe Edwards, Pine Bluff fire chief, said the cause of the fire had not been determined.

• A Little Rock police officer fired a shot at a vehicle late Friday whose driver was dragging another officer along a downtown Little Rock alley, police said. The shot shattered the back window of the vehicle, and the second officer was not seriously injured, police said. After a short pursuit, other officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver, identified as Matthew Cheatham, 23, of 10407 Mona Lane in Little Rock. Cheatham resisted arrest, and officers used a Taser to subdue him, police said. Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, police were called to an alley near Third and Scott streets, where they found a woman who told them her husband had pushed her out of a moving vehicle and dragged her down part of the alley. As the officers talked to the woman, her husband, later identified as Cheatham, arrived. One of the officers reached through the open driver's window in an attempt to shut off the vehicle, but the driver sped down the alley, dragging the officer for a short distance, police said. A second officer fired one shot at the vehicle, which left the alley and struck two vehicles at a nearby intersection.
