  • — was done during a junior high meet

"Luckily, we've had a couple of dry runs with junior high meets," West boys coach Brad LaBass said. "We've worked out some of the kinks, but it is a major challenge -- finding workers, finding enough help. Fortunately, our parents and our football staff has been huge, working events and jumping in without question.

"Being the inaugural Wolverine Invitational, we do want a lot of teams to come in and be blown away, not only by our facilities but by the way we run the program at West. I know our athletes are excited. This is the first time they get to run in their hometown and in front of their families."

Several of the teams are likely to hold their athletes to limited events since conference meets being held next week, and LaBass said he would be doing the same with his West team. Some teams will also be sending some athletes to the Kansas Relays.

This inaugural meet, however, will feature an event not normally run at meets -- the mixed 4x400-meter relay, which is being added to track and field during the 2020 Summer Olympics. Teams consist of two males and two females in any particular running order.

"As a coaching staff, we thought nobody does that around here," LaBass said. "Rogers does its relays, and that's fun for the kids. We thought about adding the co-ed relay, and the coaches get to decide the running order. That's where the strategic aspect comes into play.

"I know our kids are excited about it. I've talked to a majority of the coaches that are coming, and they're excited. It's a different dynamic and a little fun thing to do right before the conference meet."

Conflict forces schedule change

The 4A-1 Conference meet at Pea Ridge has been moved from Tuesday to Monday because of a scheduling conflict and will start at 1 p.m. that day with field events.

It now becomes one of three conference meets to be held that day as Mansfield will host the 3A-1 West meet, while the 2A-4 meet will be at Danville.

The remaining conference meet schedules for Northwest Arkansas schools are as follows:

• Tuesday -- 3A-1 East at Green Forest and 3A-4 at Jessieville.

• Wednesday -- 4A-4 at Heber Springs, 2A-1 at Eureka Springs and the 1A-1 and 1A-2 meets, which will be held at the same time in Harrison.

• April 25 -- 6A-West at Van Buren, 6A-Central at Little Rock, the 5A-West at Vilonia and the 1A-4 at Ozark.

First time for everything

Isaiah Sategna hadn't run the 100 meters this season until he did it Friday at the Bulldog Relays, and he had to do it right after he had just won the 110 hurdles.

All the Fayetteville freshman did was win the event in 10.91 seconds, the area's best time this season.

"I was happy with my 100," Sategna said. "I did that into a headwind, and my training partner -- Drake Stanton -- he was right next to me. He pushed me out of the blocks, and he was beating me. I knew I had to turn it on."

It was part of a big meet for Sategna, who won four events. In addition to the 100, he swept both hurdles races and took the long jump, then ran the final leg of Fayetteville's winning 4x400 relay team and had to go against Arkansas signee Kennedy Lightner.

"I've been working on my long jump a lot," Sategna said. "I jumped really good indoors, but I kind of got away from it. I'm starting to jump good again, but I wasn't too happy with this performance. I only jumped 22 feet, and I only took two jumps because my shins were starting to hurt and I knew I had other events."

Record watch

Bentonville High distance runner Lainey Quandt proved she has the capability of breaking a second state record this spring.

The senior ran the girls 3,200 in a winning time of 10 minutes, 56.60 seconds Friday during the Pointer Relays in Van Buren. The Class 6A state record in that event is 11:04.31 set by Ashley Williams of Mount St. Mary in 2003.

Quandt, who has already signed a national letter of intent with Arkansas, surpassed the 6A state record in the 1,600 last week when she ran a 4:59.95 at the Cyclone Relays in Russellville and became the fourth Arkansas girls runner to break the 5-minute mark. That record is a hand-held time of 5:01.8 (5:02.04 FAT equivalent) by Julie Jiskra of Conway in 1986.

Meanwhile, Cassidy Mooneyhan has put the Class 4A girls pole vault record in danger of being broken after she fell short of accomplishing the feat at last year's state meet.

The Pea Ridge junior set a personal-best outdoors when she cleared 12 feet, 6 inches during the Bulldog Relays in Fayetteville. It's the same height she cleared to set the Class 1A/4A state indoor meet record in February, and the current Class 4A record is 11-6 by Staci Yahn of Mena in 2006.

State records can only be set during state meets or at the Meet of Champs, according to Arkansas Activities Association guidelines.
