GRAND ACHIEVEMENT

Scholarships given to worthy students

Ten high school seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships April 6 at the Oscar Washington Jr. Educational Fund Scholarship Banquet at the Clinton Presidential Center.

In its second year, the banquet raises money to provide the scholarships based on academic achievement, financial need and volunteer community service.

Keith Jackson, a Parkview High School graduate who played football for the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers, was the keynote speaker. In 1992, he founded P.A.R.K. (Positive Atmosphere Reaches Kids) to provide high-risk students with an opportunity to further their education by graduating high school and attending college.

The scholarships are given in memory of Oscar Washington Jr. At the time of his death, Washington was vice president of customer services for Entergy Arkansas. During his lifetime, he was passionate about helping young people succeed.
