A police chase through a residential neighborhood in northeast Arkansas on Friday ended in an officer-involved shooting, according to a news release.

The driver of a 2008 Ford F-350 fled from authorities as officers attempted a traffic stop near Watson Street in Newport, the release from the city's Police Department states.

Officers wrote that the truck sped through a heavy residential area. When it reached the intersection of Fifth and Main streets, a passenger jumped out, and Lt. Adam Bradley stopped to detain the person.

The chase continued, but quickly switched directions and headed back toward Bradley, who was still in the road, the release states.

Police said Bradley fired three rounds into the truck, which stopped on Fifth Street. Officers searched the pickup and found various guns and drugs, according to the release.

Authorities said they arrested 40-year-old Newport native James Crump. The Mississippi resident was taken to the Jackson County jail pending formal charges. He did not appear on the jail's online inmate roster as of 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Crump was not injured in the shooting, authorities said.

An Arkansas State Police investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
