An Arkansas man is in critical condition days after suffering an electric shock while trying to rescue a stranger who had fallen into a canal in Oklahoma City's downtown district, authorities said Tuesday.

According to a report from the Oklahoma City Police Department, 31-year-old Brandon Gann of Van Buren was pulled out of Bricktown Canal shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday near the Brickopolis entertainment venue at 101 S. Mickey Mantle Drive.

Gann had jumped into the water to rescue 23-year-old Wesley Seeley, who had fallen into the canal when the light pole he was leaning against toppled over, police wrote.

Seeley tried to pull himself out by grabbing wires hanging next to the broken light post and was electrocuted, the report states. Authorities said Gann was also shocked, possibly by the same wires, in the rescue effort.

Seeley of Tuttle, Okla., died of his injuries, and Gann is being treated at an intensive care unit in Oklahoma City, according to a GoFundMe page that has raised nearly $4,000 for the personal trainer.

Posts on Gann's Facebook page show he had gotten married the day before the incident.

Oklahoma City Fire Department Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson told The Associated Press that witnesses described the two men as strangers.
