Because brown trout are vulnerable to over-harvest during the spawn, they are protected by special seasonal regulations.

From Nov. 1-Jan. 31, 2019, the White River is closed to fishing from Bull Shoals Dam to the wing dike at the Bull Shoals White River State Park Trout Dock.

From Nov. 1-Jan. 31, 2019, brown trout must be released immediately from the wing dike at Bull Shoals White River State Park trout dock to the downstream boundary of the park. Fishing is prohibited in this area from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.

On the Little Red River, fishing is catch-and-release only at the Cow Shoals, JFK and Mossy special regulations areas.

From Oct. 1-Dec. 31, fishing at Cow Shoals Catch-and-Release Area is allowed only from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset from Oct. 1-Dec. 31.
