A 15-year-old girl was killed Friday when the vehicle she was traveling in veered off a Cave Springs road and hit a tree, state police said.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 12:45 p.m. on Arkansas 264 at Farrar Road in the Benton County town of Cave Springs, according to a preliminary report.

Police say an eastbound 2015 GMC traveled off the highway on its right shoulder and sideswiped a large tree.

The 15-year-old, a passenger, died as a result, according to authorities. Another passenger, 62-year-old Carolyn Willhite of West Fork, was also hurt.

Authorities did not name the GMC's driver, and no one else was listed as injured.

The weather was described as clear and roads were said to be dry at the time.

At least 199 people have died in traffic crashes on Arkansas roads this year, according to preliminary figures.
