Man dies in Fort Smith fire

A man died in a fire at a Fort Smith house early Friday morning.

The Fort Smith Fire Department responded to the fire at 2300 Birnie Ave. just before 4 a.m.

The 37-year-old man, whose name has not been released, lived in the house with his grandmother who was out of state during the time of the fire, according to Fire Marshal Carey St. Cyr.

St. Cyr estimated that the fire caused about $30,000 in damages to the $80,000 home.

The coroner has taken the body to Little Rock.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
