Fort Smith man sentenced for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine

MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- A Fort Smith man was sentenced to 186 months in prison and eight years supervised release for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine Thursday in Muskogee, Okla.

Nowlin Lee Waugh Jr., 35, was found guilty Aug. 15 after a jury trail, according to a press release by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Waugh on Interstate 40 in Okmulgee County, the release said. The troopers could see the defendant moving erratically inside the vehicle during a pursuit.

When the vehicle stopped, the troopers saw bags containing methamphetamine; a trash can with methamphetamine and bleach in it; an open bottle of bleach; and several open plastic baggies with methamphetamine residue inside.

Troopers also recovered more than 50 grams of methamphetamine Waugh hadn't been able to destroy with bleach.

"Despite the defendant's best efforts to destroy the evidence of his crime, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers were able to process the crime scene and collect the evidence needed to prove to the jury that Waugh intended to distribute methamphetamine," said United States Attorney Brian J. Kuester.
