• A Little Rock police officer filed a federal lawsuit against the Police Department and the city Wednesday, alleging they attempted to destroy his dog, told him he was fired and finally removed him from the "Dog Squad." Officer James Lesher is seeking unspecified punitive and compensatory damages for alleged violations of constitutional rights, as well as a court order returning him to the canine unit. Lt. Charles Holladay, police spokesman, said he could not comment on the lawsuit because "we haven't been served or had the opportunity to determine what is being alleged." Zeke, Lesher's German shepherd, was dismissed from the Police Department after biting an 8-year-old Cabot boy three times Feb. 8.

• Twice in the past week, Pulaski County Humane Society employee Kay Jordan rescued malnourished horses -- 10 in Pope County and two in Fulton County. On Friday, Jordan was contacted by authorities who told her of the malnourished horses in Fulton County. Jordan said the sheriff's office told her the horses were owned by a director of a local 4-H Club. "The horses were in bad shape, but we were given permission by the owner to take them," Jordan said. The next day, Jordan received an e-mail with pictures of 10 horses in Atkins. "There were nine adults with one 8-month-old that looks like it's 4 months old," Jordan said Sunday. "They were just skin and bones and had no water to drink except from a slough that had what looked like oil floating on top of it."
