Vet Center in Fayetteville to host chili cook-off Friday

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fayetteville Vet Center will have its annual chili cook-off Friday to bring together veterans and those who serve them, said Daniel McLain, center office manager.

The free event is open to the public and will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1416 N. College Ave., according to a news release. The idea is to let everyone know about the center and how it can help veterans, said Wanda Shull, public affairs officer for Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks.

"Everybody knows a veteran," Shull said.

Veterans can taste and judge the chili, tour the center and meet Vet Center staff members and state legislators.

"In the process, we will be teaching about what we do at the Vet Center and the services we provide for the community," McLain said.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has 300 Vet Centers nationwide and provides counseling for military-related concerns, including mental health and marital issues, according to the release. Centers help veterans with employment referrals, coordinating benefits, planning education and bereavement counseling.
