Lance Arbuckle, principal of Rogers New Technology High School, was named the state's secondary principal of the year. Annette Freeman of Springdale's George Elementary School was named elementary principal of the year.

Mike Mertens, the association's assistant executive director, presented the awards to both principals at their schools Friday, according to news releases from the association.

The secondary principal award is given annually to the person who has "succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, and has been acknowledged by peers for exemplary contribution to this profession," the release states.

Arbuckle has served 15 years as an administrator. He was an assistant principal at Rogers High School before being chosen as the first principal of New Technology High School, which opened in fall 2013 with about 300 students. School enrollment has increased to nearly 700.

The elementary award is given to a principal who is respected by students, colleagues, parents and the community; shows a strong commitment to their professional growth; shows strong educational leadership by setting high expectations for staff and students; and maintains an orderly, purposeful learning environment, according to the association.

Freeman is in her 17th year as principal at George Elementary School, which has about 600 students.
