Rogers teacher gets Milken award, one of 35 in country

by Staff Report | November 18, 2016 at 11:32 a.m.

ROGERS — A Mathias Elementary School teacher on Friday received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.

Kara Davis, a fourth-grade teacher, was surprised with the award during a schoolwide assembly.

She's one of only 35 educators nationally to receive the Milken award this year. The Milken awards website equates the award to the Oscars or the Grammys, but for educators.

According to a profile of Davis on the award website, she help students "surpass their own expectations."

She once had students study congestion problems in the school's parking lot, including problems caused by adults' subpar parking and driving, according to the profile.

She also started a class for first-year teachers, and led a fundraiser to put technology in the hands of students, the profile stated.
