Work will close Interstate 49 lanes overnight

SPRINGDALE -- Construction work on Interstate 49 in Johnson and Springdale requires overnight lane closings starting Sunday and running throughout next week, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.

Beginning Sunday night, crews will place asphalt concrete to level uneven areas of the road between the Johnson Mill Boulevard interchange and the Don Tyson Parkway overpass. North and south outside lanes on I-49 will alternately be closed during this time between mile markers 68 and 72 to allow for construction.

The overnight lane closings will occur nightly starting on Sunday and ending Friday morning, weather permitting. Traffic will be controlled using signage and barrels.

• North I-49 lane closings will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

• South I-49 lane closings will occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Mainline traffic will be routed to the newly constructed median lane adjacent to the work area during overlay operations and returned to existing lanes each day at the conclusion of the work shift.

The project is part of AHTD's Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from Johnson to Sunset Avenue in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2016. More information on this $28.3 million project is available at ConnectingArkansasProgram.com.
