BENTONVILLE — Parks and Recreation crews will start to dismantle The Rink at Lawrence Plaza today.

The season ended on Sunday after being extended two weekends because so many days were lost because of warm and wet weather in December.

The rink was closed nine days the last month of last year as either temperatures in the 60s melted the ice down to the concrete underneath it or heavy rains made any outdoor recreational activity impossible.

There were 743 skaters the first extra weekend, which was Jan. 21-24, and there were 234 skaters the second weekend, Jan. 28-31, according to the department's report.

David Wright, parks and recreation director, said he was appreciative of those who came out to take advantage of the extra ice time.

"It's just that time of year to turn off the chillers," he said.

The plaza will soon be transformed into a splash pad, which will open May 15.
