Quiz Bowl teams to seek state title

High school students from across the state will showcase their academic acumen Saturday at the Arkansas Quiz Bowl 2016, which will be televised live from the Arkansas Educational Television Network studios in Conway.

The event, also known as the annual Governor's Academic Competition and involving two teams from each of the state's seven high school conferences, will be broadcast in two parts: 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4 p.m.

The first round of matches beginning at 9 a.m. will include in order of appearance:

  1. 5A -- Harrison High vs. Little Rock Christian Academy.

  2. 3A -- Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock vs. Haas Hall Academy charter school in Fayetteville.

  3. 6A -- Russellville High vs. Sheridan High.

1A -- Norfork High vs. LISA Academy North charter school in North Little Rock.

The second round of matches beginning at 1:30 p.m. will include in order of appearance:

  1. 2A -- Hazen High vs. Conway Christian.

  2. 7A -- Conway High vs. Fayetteville High.

  3. 4A -- Subiaco Academy vs. Brookland High.

The public is invited to be a part of the audience at the AETN studios, 350 Donaghey Ave. in Conway. Audience members will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Spectators will be admitted via the Sesame Street entrance and should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. for the first round and 1 p.m. for the second round.

Teams of students will answer questions on literature, math, science, history, art, music and economics in the competition for scholarship awards and the opportunity to represent the state in national tournaments.

The state conference finals Saturday are the culmination of regional tournaments held around the state during March.

8 state corporate scholarships given

Eight Arkansas high school seniors are among more than 1,000 students named this week as recipients of corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

Corporate sponsors provide the scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents in the communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

The Arkansas recipients, their high schools, their probable career field and the corporate sponsors are:

• Darcey A. Collins of Bauxite, Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, forestry, Georgia-Pacific Foundation.

• Kira M. Simonson, Bentonville High, undecided, Hormel Foods Corp.

• Nicholas Christian Van Slooten, Bentonville High, finance, Pepsico.

• Joshua L. Vines, Conway High, engineering, Dr. Joseph J. Jacobs Scholarship Program.

• Yupeng Liu, Little Rock Central High, medicine, General Dynamics.

• Nicholas J. Vanhaute of Maumelle, Little Rock Catholic High, computer science, Molex.

• Sarah M. Handloser, Sheridan High School, law, GAF Materials Corp.

• Jared Scott Gary, Springdale Har-Ber High, astrophysics, American Electric Power.

Most of the corporate-sponsored scholarships are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
