Gochenour leads heptathlon

Arkansas junior Alex Gochenour leads the Texas Relays heptathlon after the first day with 3,756 points.

Gochenour had personal-bests in the 100-meter hurdles (13.15 seconds), high jump (5-10) and shot put (13.42-8.75). She ran a wind-aided 24.08 in the 200. She has a 247-point lead going into today's final three events: the long jump, javelin and 800.

Arkansas' Leigha Brown (3,386 points) and Taliyah Brooks (3,359) are sixth and seventh.

BASKETBALL

Gamble regional finalist for All-America honor

Arkansas State junior guard Aundrea Gamble was named a regional finalist for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division I All-America team.

The WBCA announced the nominees Wednesday.

Gamble, a two-time Sun Belt Conference player of the year, led ASU to a 24-11 record and an appearance in the WNIT. She averaged 19.2 points per game and set a school record with 171 assists.

The WBCA will announce its All-America team on April 4.

BOWLING

ASU among eight teams in NCAA championship

The Arkansas State women's team, ranked third in the nation, was among the eight teams selected Wednesday to compete at this year's NCAA Women's Bowling Championship April 9-11 at the Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis.

Joining ASU in the field of eight teams are Nebraska, Fairleigh Dickinson, Vanderbilt, Central Missouri, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Red Wolves will make their eighth consecutive appearance in the national tournament. They've earned four second-place finishes this season and have been no worse than sixth in tournament competition.

The championship will air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. Central on April 11.

BASEBALL

Miller leads OBU over Delta State

Reuben Miller drove in three runs to help Jacob May earn his first victory of the season as Ouachita Baptist defeated Delta State 9-4 on Wednesday at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia.

Miller hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to give the Tigers (13-9) a 1-0 lead, then hit another sacrifice fly in the second inning to put OBU ahead 4-1. He added an opposite-field RBI single in the eighth inning.

May allowed 4 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits in 4 1/3 innings to get the victory. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth with no outs, inducing a pop-up to center field and a double play.

SOFTBALL

SAU sweeps doubleheader over UAM

Southern Arkansas held Arkansas-Monticello to one run in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, winning the first game 3-1 and the second 7-1 in Magnolia.

After a bases-loaded single by Aubree Head gave UAM a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the first game, SAU answered with a three-run home run by Courtney Hudgins. The Cotton Blossoms jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as well, on a fielder's choice from Lacy Blanchard, but the Muleriders answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first. They added single runs in the second and sixth innings, and added two more runs in the fifth.
