Artillery demonstrations, historical re-enactments and other activities during July are among events sanctioned by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the war, Chairman Tom Dupree announced.
A complete list of activities, sites and contact information is available on the commission's website at arkansascivilwar150.com. Events include:
• "The Surrender at Jacksonport," featuring a re-enactment of the farewell speech of Confederate Gen. M. J. Thompson, is Saturday at Jacksonport State Park in Jackson County.
• A cannon firing demonstration will be Sunday at Lake Charles State Park in Lawrence County.
• Mark Christ of the Sesquicentennial Commission will present "Arkansas's Civil War Comes to an End: The View from 150 Years Later," at the Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville on July 19.
• "The World Turned Upside Down," the ninth annual Red River Heritage Symposium, will be July 25 at Historic Washington State Park in Hempstead County.
• Lakeport Legacies will feature Blake Wintory speaking on "Annie Reeves' Chicot County Civil War Diary, 1861-1863," at Lakeport Plantation at Lake Village on July 30.
