Fayetteville car fire victim's identity released

FAYETTEVILLE — Police released Tuesday the name of a local man who died in his car when it caught fire in August, according to a news release.

Police needed an autopsy to officially identify the remains of Donovan Ward Clifton, 33, of Fayetteville, police said.

The fire’s heat was intense, police spokesman Craig Stout has said. The vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Clifton’s body was found in the driver’s seat of his car around 3:03 a.m., Monday, Aug. 3, at On The Mark Sports Bar and Grill, at 2588 N. Gregg Ave.

Firefighters found Clifton’s body after the fire was extinguished, according to the news release.

The state Crime Lab determined Clifton died of acute smoke and soot inhalation, police said.

The fire marshal has ruled the cause of the fire “undetermined,” Stout said in a message Tuesday.
