6 buffalo escape in Hot Springs, 1 recaptured

Authorities in Hot Springs have recaptured one of six buffalo that escaped from a farm early Thursday morning, police say.

Officers learned about the escaped buffalo when a vehicle struck one about 4 a.m. on Golf Links Road near the Hot Springs Country Club, Hot Springs Police Department spokesman Cpl. Sonia Luzader said in a news release.

There was no "significant" injury to the person or buffalo involved in the accident, only damages to the vehicle, Luzader said.

The vehicle had to be towed after the accident, and the buffalo has injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, City of Hot Springs spokesman Terry Payne said in an email.

The buffalo belong to a farm located near Shady Grove Road, the release states.

Hot Springs police officers, with the help of local animal services, the Garland County sheriff's office and the owners of the buffalo, have contained one of the buffalo but are still working to secure the other five, Luzader said.

The buffalo were in a wooded area near Malvern Avenue and Bellaire Drive as of 4:45 p.m., Payne said.

Those involved in the recapture efforts are waiting for additional resources, including tranquilizer darts, Payne said.

The injured buffalo is being held in a large trailer while authorities work to round up the other escaped animals.
