Highway department postpones I-49 work near Springdale

Pavement work originally scheduled for next weekend along Interstate 49 near Springdale has been postponed, officials said Friday.

Lane closures were originally planned for Oct. 17 through 19 along a 2.6-mile stretch of I-49 between Wagon Wheel Road in Springdale and Arkansas 264, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said in a statement.

Pavement work is complete on the northbound side of the interstate, but the inside lane will continue to be closed until work on the barrier wall is complete, highway department spokesman Danny Straessle said.

Arkansas Highway and Transportation Director Scott Bennett said high traffic volume is expected this weekend due to the University of Arkansas football game, and the following weekend the War Eagle Craft Fair is scheduled.

A new date for the southbound work has not yet been set.
